for Flower Market NYC

We were approached by a few of the key players in the Flower District of Midtown Manhattan, who had teamed up in a consolidated effort to move the district’s operations into a location that will allow for a better operational infrastructure. They identified the issues they all share; they wanted to create a flower destination that would support their functional needs like refrigeration, delivery and pickup, display and preparation, while expanding the experience of flower shopping in the city. Coming together into one location where all needs can addressed as a shared community. This made a lot of sense.

In addressing their design challenge, we were first attracted to the unique relationship flowers have with our lives and culture. Flowers symbolize a celebration of life and all if its moments.

Another element of the inspiration is the influence flowers have on other aspects of our life. Flowers and their motifs are seen in many iterations in our environments, from culinary experiences, fashion, jewelry, art, wall coverings, and more.

We designed the NYC Flower Market to encompasses that reach, and be inclusive of the floral experience beyond cut flowers. We wanted to create a wonderful hub of flowers with modern energy and expression.

We provoked this experience in a location in Long Island City where all of this activity finds a home. From a practical standpoint, the design incorporates daylight and ensures stable humidity and temperature conditions for the multitude of flower stalls. Functional elements of the flower market are enhanced by cafes, wedding shops, chocolatiers, perfumeries, local craft offerings, and a rooftop garden for events.

The setting draws visual inspiration from Biology and the study of flowers, and the mood of the Flower Market instills a sense of calm along with opportunities for discovery and enjoyment of the beauty of the flora.

Another aspect we included in the design is a floral mural that covers the entire facade and roof, as we felt that within our modern interaction with maps and navigation systems, how nice would it be to see floral satellite imagery in that block, and mark the destination with a physical representation of what it holds.
